    Acacia Honey

According to many people, acacia honey is the best, most sought-after honey in the world! The name ‘Acacia’ comes from the Greek word akakia, meaning thorny Egyptian tree.

Acacia honey is derived from the nectar of the Robinia pseudoacacia flower, commonly known as the black locust or the false acacia tree, which is native to North America and Europe as it grows in subtropical and tropical climates. These trees belong to Fabaceae family, so they fix nitrogen into the soil, which makes it a great choice for damaged or poor soils. They grow to an average height of 5-10 meters, have large crowns and long branches, which provide a very intense smell. Their flowers can vary depending on the species, but they are usually yellow or white.

Acacia honey is considered a superfood because of its multiple health benefits, which is likely attributed to its high antioxidant content. It is also the least allergenic of all other honey types as its low pollen content makes it suitable for many allergy sufferers. Acacia Honey is lighter in colour in comparison to traditional honey and appears almost transparent. It has a very light texture with a neutral floral aroma. Due to its mild flavour, it is used as a natural sweetener in foods without modifying the food’s natural flavour. Acacia honey remains liquid longer and usually takes more than a year to crystallize as the nectar has a higher natural fructose content.

    Where is Acacia Honey from?

The Robinia pseudoacacia flower, also known as the black locus or the false acacia tree, is native to North America, but it is also found a lot across Europe where it is commonly planted as an ornament and for stabilizing dry soil. It is specifically found in the mountain areas of Greece.

    The Harvesting of Acacia Honey

Black locust trees also do not always produce honey every year as it depends on weather conditions. Even when the nectar flow is good, the bloom period is only about 10 days between the months of May and June. This makes Acacia honey highly popular and means it is usually more expensive than traditional types of honey. The honey is harvested in spring when the bees have already collected the pollen and made the honey. Using sustainable methods, the product is collected from the hives, which are located in the vicinity of the Acacia forests. The sustainable harvesting methods ensure highly pure honey is obtained without losing its natural properties.

The Healing Benefits of Acacia Honey

Acacia honey is not just used for culinary purposes. Due to its various health benefits, it has been used throughout history as a therapeutic remedy.

Here are some of the health benefits of Acacia honey:

    • Rich in antioxidants – Flavonoids are the main type of antioxidants in Acacia honey. Flavonoids may reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.
    • Natural antibacterial properties – Acacia honey contains components which slowly release small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a type of acid that kills bacteria by breaking down their cell walls, and helps to boost the immune system.
    • May aid wound healing – Honey has been used to treat wounds since ancient times. Acacia honey’s antioxidant and antibacterial properties may help to speed wound healing and prevent bacterial contamination and infection.
    • May aid in skin care - Due to its strong antibacterial activity, Acacia honey could help keep your skin free of bacteria, which may prevent acne. The minerals and antioxidants can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles, inflammation, scars and burns.
    • Can benefit digestion and help to clean the liver – Acacia honey contains many beneficial elements, including up to 415 different enzymes and vitamins. It also has laxative properties which decrease intestinal inflammations and reduces constipation.
