Bee Venom, Honestly: What the Research Actually Shows

Bee venom comes from the sting bees use to defend the hive. It's acidic and contains a mix of peptides and enzymes, the best-studied of which is melittin. Here's an honest look at what the research on it actually supports.

Joint comfort and inflammation

Bee venom has a long history of traditional use in China and East Asia for joint discomfort, and melittin does have anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies. A 2018 trial (Chen, Zhou & Qin) compared bee-venom acupuncture against the standard rheumatoid arthritis medications methotrexate and celecoxib in 120 patients, and found broadly similar symptom reduction between the two. Worth knowing: the study wasn't double-blind and had no placebo group, which makes it hard to say how much of the effect was the bee venom itself. Promising, not proven, and not a reason to swap out a prescribed treatment without your rheumatologist's input.

Skin and wrinkles

A small 2015 study looked at bee-venom serum in 22 women and found reductions in wrinkle count and depth after twelve weeks of twice-daily use. It's a genuinely interesting result, but again, there was no placebo comparison, and cosmetic studies without one tend to show placebo effects of their own. Take it as an encouraging early signal rather than settled science.

Immune sensitivity – a serious caution

Venom immunotherapy, where a clinician injects small, controlled doses of bee venom to help patients with severe bee-sting allergies build tolerance, is a real medical treatment, but it only happens in a hospital setting under specialist supervision. It is not something to attempt at home, and if you have any reaction to a bee sting or a bee-venom product, of any severity, please seek medical help straight away.

What we actually offer

Our own Bee Venom Nectar Balm with Mānuka Honey combines bee venom with genuine Mānuka honey in a skin cream, made in New Zealand. As with any bee-venom product, if you're allergic to bee stings, it isn't for you, and if you're new to it, we'd always suggest a patch test first.
