Mānuka honey is unique to New Zealand and has a great reputation for its antibacterial character. Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy it.
Simplest of all: a spoonful, enjoyed as it is. Some people like a spoonful before a meal, others just when they fancy it.
Mānuka honey is a popular ingredient in skincare, and a simple face mask is a genuinely pleasant, gentle treat. Worth knowing: this is about the honey's cosmetic use, not wound care, sterile medical-grade Mānuka honey dressings are a different, regulated product entirely, used under clinical supervision, not a jar from a food shelf.
Mānuka honey is a lovely natural alternative to sugar, on porridge, in a smoothie, as a salad dressing, or a marinade. If you bake with it, bear in mind that heat does reduce some of its natural enzyme content, though it'll still taste wonderful.
Simply stir a teaspoon into your tea, once it's cooled slightly. Adding it straight into boiling water will destroy more of the natural enzymes than you'd probably like, given what you're paying for them, so give it a minute to cool first.
There's no strict dose, it's a food, not a medicine. Most people enjoy a spoonful or two a day as part of a normal, varied diet, however you like it best.
